The top 25 greatest Vampire movies

25. Underworld evolution (2006)
The sequel to Underworld follows the first film very closely and the story is set on the same night. Despite being hindered in its own continuity, the gory effects are an exciting gift to the fans. It expands on the mythology of the vampire-lycan conflict well as Selene leads Michael (the first vampire-werewolf hybrid) to discover the ancient truth behind the Corvinus brothers. Kate Beckinsale is great in the film as well as the introduction of famous thespian Derek Jacobi. While it is not the strongest of the series, Evolution delivers the foundation for both the medieval oddity that is 2009's Rise of the Lycans and the rubbish 'Awakening'.

24.  The Fearless Vampire killers (1967)
This is Roman Polanski's fourth film. It is a slow moving but handsome film. It features Polanski's himself as the young assistant to a vampire-hunting professor. It also stars Sharon Tate as the bubble-bath- taking Sarah, tragically the young actress and wife of Polanski was murdered by the Manson Family a year and a half later. This film is notable for having a gay vampire, a jewish vampire and a wolf munching Igor-like servant. This film is billed as a comedy though some scenes do not always  have laugh-out-loud moments. The stunning costumes and the ball scene make this film a cult classic.

23. Cronos (1993)
Guillermo del Toro's film is one of the best ever to come out of Mexico. It tells the story of an ageing antique dealer named Jesus Gris who finds an ancient scarab that turns people into vampires; he soon finds out that others are after it too. Well paced and consummately imaginative, Cronos made when the director was 29, won a lot of prizes, including nine Mexican Academy Awards. It's a film with heart, the love that persists between Gris' granddaughter and himself as an immortal is touching. This film sheds a new light on bloodsuckers while retaining a classically authentic, evocative feel.

22. The Hunger (1983)
This glossy film received many mixed reviews from fans such as 'flashy and incomprehensible'. But Tony Scott's exotic film has razor sharp editing that was certainly  well ahead of its time. It is beautiful and should be described as an 'erotic thriller'. The vampire couple, beautifully cast by Catherine Deneuve and David Bowie, are different than the typical vampires and certain cliches are broken in this film.

21. Dracula Prince of Darkness (1966)
Hammer's direct sequel to Dracula, released eight years after the first one and done in the usual moderate Hammer budget. It didn't have quite the same impact as its predecessor. The story is rather straightforward and doesn't allow the Count to do much and talk. Nevertheless, the movie is full of fun for vampire addicts and fans of Lee. Despite not doing much Lee still retains a sinister presence and some of the deaths are pleasingly unpleasant.

20. Let Me In (2010)
Sometimes US remakes of foreign originals get a bad rep for good reasons. They are often just an excuse to cash in on the success of a foreign film because Western audiences (in particular Americans) can't be bothered to read the fucking subtitles. This film is somewhat effective because it deals with the whole vampire and human friendship and romance through 13 year old children. Despite moving the setting both geographically and temporally, the sense of alienation and oppression remains intact. Some special effects, especially when Abby attacks and feeds feels a bit off. The central relationship and themes of bullying/friendship are painfully poignant, building to a roof-raising, climatic massacre. It is exceptionally well put together and the actors are brilliant, especially Chloe Grace Moretz.

19. Blade 2 (2002)
Another great film from the best Mexican director- Guillermo del Toro. This film was the director's Hollywood breakthrough. It follows the rules of superior sequels: bigger, better. Blade is now facing a a foe that is not only a threat to humanity but a plague to vampire kind. Scarier, slicker, funnier and introduces the reapers are freaky vampire creatures that Blade must destroy with the most unconventional allies, vampires. With pretty cool and gory fights and stunning creature designs, this film belongs in the hall of fame of Guillermo del Toro's films.

18. The Moth Diaries (2012)
Directed by Mary Harron won acclaim for directing 'I shot Andy Warhol',and 'American Psycho', unfortunately her latest film tries too hard to not aim at the Twilight fans. It is however different in genre, style and does not resemble the films of the Twilight saga at all. The actors are good, Sarah Bolger from 'The Tudors' is the heroine Rebecca who lives in a girl's school and meets the new strange girl Ernessa Lily Cole and suspects her of being a vampire. The plot is a bit difficult to understand in some parts, not much happens. It is difficult to like this film. I liked the fact that the vampire character is so different in this film, she doesn't feed on blood, more on energy. It deals with sensitive issues such as suicide and has some bloody moments that could be seen as stunning or just gory and disappointing.

17. Fright Night (1985)
This movie resuscitated the vampire genre. The story of a boy who calls in an ageing television host because he believes he has a vampire living next door to him. Fright Night is both funny and entertaining and even quite warm-hearted, It has some scary and sexy moments, especially the scene in the night club. Despite its often spectacularly gory special effects, it remains a classic today.

16. Dracula (1931)
The great Bela Lugosi played The Count on stage in 1922, he almost didn't get the role in the film. Lon Chaney who was cast had died and Lugosi took the role. This classic film launched a tidal wave of Universal horrors, it made Lugosi a star and still provides eerie, hypnotic moments today.

15. Dracula (1958)
The first Dracula film with the horror legend Christopher Lee. Produced by Hammer studios, it made millions and along with the previous year's 'The Curse of Frankenstein', set the Hammer studio, previously best known for crime dramas, on a long and fruitful horror path. Even though its template is now familiar, the movie still remains bold and thrilling.

14. Salem's Lot (1979)
Directed by Tobe Hooper, this TV movie is a stunning as well as chilling film. It is adapted from the master of horror, Stephen King's novel of the same name and is a terrific tale of vampires. A must see for vampire fans and Stephen King fans, it is creepy and relies on old school tricks to create tension. Salem's Lot remains  one of the best vampire films ever made and some scenes in the film are truly terrifying still today. It is a good adaptation of the novel and effective in creating the vampire genre.

13. Fright Night (2010)
As a remake to the 1985 classic, this film works. In the Las Vegas suburbs Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) lives with his mum. When devilishly handsome Jerry Dandridge (a very hot and sexy Colin Farrell) moves in next door, Charley begins to suspect he's a vampire, a fear that's confirmed when Charley finds one of his neighbors locked in Jerry's house and bitten. He seeks out celebrity magician Peter Vincent (an excellent and Criss Angel looking David Tennant in sweary form) and battle the creature. Funny, full of action, Farrell and Tenant are excellent. The special effects and 3D are weird, it might not be a frightening film but it's still entertaining.

12. 30 Days of Night (2007)
This film swims in gore and blood. Directed by edgy British filmmaker David Slade and adapted from Steve Niles and Brian Templesmiths's gritty comic, 30 Days of Night has a very smart premise, it makes one wonder why it was not thought of before. For exactly one month every year the lunar cycle plunges an Alaskan town into darkness- a perfect hunting ground for a band of feral, predatory vampires. The cast is good, Josh Hartnett as the heroic sheriff and Danny Huston as the evil leader of the pack. This gory film actually makes vampires scary.

11. Underworld (2003)
Originally pitched as the Romeo and Juliet of the vampire and werewolf world, this film is cool. The girl in it is a vampire who falls in love with a lycan (another term for werewolf). They fall in love as both their species have been at war for centuries. Kate Beckinsale is excellent and is a kick ass role model for females and males alike. The original Underworld is the best of the series, a series which continues to this day. It is still watchable today and remains a cult classic.

10. Blade (1998)
This superhero film opened the gates for the plethora of  other superhero films that followed throughout the years after. It proved that comic book characters could work on the big screen, and make good money. The Marvel character of Blade the dhampir (half human half vampire) underwent some changes in this film but he was brilliantly portrayed by Wesley Snipes. It is set in a very scary world that is dominated by vampires and Blade is the Katana wielding urban avenger who swears to destroy them. A visually stunning and action film that is still cult today.

9. Near Dark (1987)
A western with horror elements, but a good western. The characters are the iconic, sick-and-twisted family of blood. This film puts an interesting take on vampire genre, it could be described as a 'modern vampire western'. Though it flopped on release it remains a classic today.

8. Bram Stocker's Dracula (1992)
This is often called Coppola's 'expensive interpretation' or 'controversial movie'. It is still a visually stunning, gory and erotic film with beautiful costumes. This film suffers from miscasting (a wimpy wooden Keanu Reeves) and uneven pacing. It is certainly a well made and bloody film, a good bloody package of violence and gore, but not the best adaptation of the famous novel.

The following video  has some 10 interesting facts about the film

7. Nosferatu (1922)
This film was almost never released because Stoker's widow ordered all the prints destroyed when it was found to infringe the copyright of her late husband's Dracula. Thankfully one copy survived. This film is unique, stylish and genuinely unsettling with an actor that 'is' a vampire. Full of memorable and eerie images, the best one is near the end when the vampire's shadow appears on the wall as he ascends to the room of where the female victim is sleeping and his silhouette even appears to tun the door knob.

6. From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Much like '30 Days of Night' this film precedes the bloody 2007 feature, is just as gory and scary. From the great Robert Rodriguez, this film stars George Clooney, Quentin Tarantino and other similar faces from his other films. Set in a seedy strip bar in the middle of the desert, two bank robbing brothers along with hostages must survive the night when the vampires who run the place declare it's 'supper time'. This film has got obscene amounts of icky gore, stunning pre-CG prosthetic effects, Tarantino's trademark dialogue and Salma Hayek in a bikini. This film is super scary, it scared me.

5. Let the Right One In (2008)
This Swedish thriller feels like it's been around for ages as it looks like a classic foreign film. A bullied boy befriends a vampire girl in a Stockholm country estate in the middle of winter. This film was a hit because it depicts a gripping rite of passage, an unconventional friendship, the death of innocence and the beginning of young love. It's got stunning cinematography and its moderate pace is violently interrupted by a bloody sequence set in a swimming pool. The remake of this film is good but this original is better. As I always say to people who stay away from foreign films and chose crappy US remakes- RTFS, Read The Fucking Subtitles!

4. Twilight (2008)
This film kick started the modern day vampire craze and the great phenomenon.. The story of a young girl who falls for a tall, sparkly stranger (who happens to be a vampire). Twilight has inspired such a level of devotion from its tween fanbase that the nickname Twi hards has been coined. Catherine Hardwicke directed this and did a good job. It portrays first love in a supernatural sense in a teenage high school world pretty well. It's got several superb-powered action sequences and a mythology steeped in vampire lore.  Despite what haters say, I really liked this movie,I think the cinematography is beautiful and is a good adaptation of the novel.

3. Eclipse: The Twilight Saga (2011)
Obviously it is better than 'New Moon'. Directed by British director and expert in vampire attacks (30 Days of Night), Neil Marshall, this film is entertaining. The scene where an army of newborn vampires emerges from the water is quite haunting and effective. The battle between werewolves and vampires is well executed.

2. Interview with the Vampire (1994)
There are many reasons why this film works so well. Reason 1: Neil Jordan directed this beautiful and faithful adaptation of Anne Rice's novel. Reason 2: the starry cast: Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Antonio Banderas, Christian Slater and Kirsten Dunst. This film is elegant, erotic and spine chilling. It is a cult classic and will always remain so.

1. The Lost Boys (1987)
The best vampire film is the one that enabled the great show 'Buffy' to be created.  This film really did inspire Joss Whedon to create the vampire slayer character and show. Joel Shcumacher's comedy horror suggested that vampires could be cool, thrill seeking teenagers. Destroying the idea that vampires are dark and brooding undead guys wandering in graveyards, this film stared that vampires could 'sleep all day and party all night'. The Lost Boys is a film of its time, with the clothes, hairstyles and music. The story is simple and it resonated with the youthful audiences who seek escape from parental influences. The Lost Boys deserves a spot as number one because it is still watchable today, a cult classic and its influence created a good show years later.

Here are two videos that rank the scariest vampire films in a different order. I enjoy their videos and they mention other films I've not heard of or talked about yet.
